Author: Dave Rowlands

Hi, I'm Dave. As you can already tell, I'm one of the authors at AiR, as well as a member of the podcast. I'm also the Dave you see on our live streams on Twitch and YouTube. I am an atheist. I don't use the 'lack of belief' definition though, and use the 'belief God does not exist' definition for me. I have always been an atheist, and have never been part of a religion. While I do enjoy discussions around the existence of God, I try to post a wider range of content here. My focus is mainly on philosophy, as that is the topic I enjoy. I have a BA in Philosophy and Psychology, and am waiting on the results for my MA in Philosophy. Will find out in December whether I have been awarded the degree! This is why my posts tend to focus more on the philosophy side of things. I try to post a wider range of topics than just those surrounding theism and atheism. You will also find articles discussing arguments from atheists that I find to be lacking, or poorly argued. This is mostly because I want to see the atheist community improve its arguments, and to see atheists give stronger and better arguments. Hopefully you will enjoy some of my content, and I hope even more that it makes you look at certain arguments and ideas in a different way. Plus, hopefully some atheists that dismiss philosophy out of hand might actually see it's more interesting than they first though. Philosophy is an awesome subject!
Me and the Skeptic and Atheist Community

Me and the Skeptic and Atheist Community

Introduction A little while ago Shannon Q released a video of her speech from Better 2022.  Better is a conference organised by The Atheist Network Group, or TANG for short. The title of the video, and I’m assuming the speech also, is ‘Are you in the “Atheist Community”?’. Are you not already subscribed to Shannon…

Epistemic Humility (Better Scepticism 1)

Epistemic Humility (Better Scepticism 1)

Introduction They say you should write about what you know. Seeing as I know nothing though, I thought a good place to start would be a guide to better scepticism. By scepticism here I mean scepticism in the sense that most in the sceptic community use the term. Rather than in the sense of Radical…

The Gumball Analogy

The Gumball Analogy

Introduction You are presented with a jar full of gumballs.  There are no broken gumballs inside the jar, they are all whole gumballs.  Most sceptics and atheists will have heard the Gumball Analogy already.  It’s a pretty common analogy used by sceptics and atheists who have discussions on places like Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube.  Fans…

If There’s No Evidence, It Doesn’t Exist

If There’s No Evidence, It Doesn’t Exist

Introduction There’s an argument that I have seen pop up a lot over the last few years from my fellow atheists and sceptics.  It’s an argument that I think needs to be addressed, for several reasons.  Among these reasons are that it shows bad epistemology, bad reasoning, and bad logic.  The argument also shows bad…

In Response to Daniel Goldman on Belief

In Response to Daniel Goldman on Belief

Introduction Recently I encountered Daniel Goldman a couple of times on Twitter.  The first time was during a discussion about the use of the words atheism, theism, agnosticism, etc.  The conversation was pleasant enough, especially when we consider how many of those kinds of discussions go!  The second encounter was a discussion about belief, and…

Scepticism, Dogma, and the Definition of Atheism

Scepticism, Dogma, and the Definition of Atheism

Introduction The collective moans of all those reading the title of this article can be heard.  I wouldn’t blame you for moaning either.  After all, who needs another article arguing for what the definition of atheism is?  And I would agree with that!  There are plenty of arguments out there about what the ‘true’ definition…

“If atheism is true…”

“If atheism is true…”

Introduction When it comes to asking questions about atheism, there are many malformed questions that the theist may put forward.  Anyone who has been an atheist and active on any social media platform will have come across such questions. Those questions that make us kind of tilt our heads and go ‘huh?’.  Two of those…

What’s in the Box?: A Three-Pound Rabbit

What’s in the Box?: A Three-Pound Rabbit

Introduction Imagine that someone presents us with a box.  That box weighs three pounds.  The person presenting us with the box says that there is a rabbit in the box, and the fact that it weighs three pounds proves that there is a rabbit in the box.  This is not the case of course, just…

Atheists, Atheism, and Ambiguity

Atheists, Atheism, and Ambiguity

Introduction An argument that I often hear is that ‘lack of belief in God’ and ‘do not believe God exists’ are the same thing.  Or the argument that ‘Just because I do not believe Y does not mean that I believe X’.  I will say outright now that I tend to agree with this, with…

Rockin’ Atheism Part 3: Atheism in Greek Antiquity

Introduction In the previous two parts of this series we covered why prescribing words for others does not work, and had a brief look at various definitions of atheism.  This part will cover, in brief, the history of atheism and atheists in Ancient Greece.  It is not uncommon for some atheists to argue that they…

Rockin’ Atheism Pt 2: Defining Atheism

Introduction In the previous part of this series we looked at the problems inherent in the idea of stating that the word atheism can only have one definition, and arguing that everyone must use one particular definition.  In this part of the series we will look at the various ways in which atheism is defined,…

How Rational Are You?: A Nightmare on Reason St.

Introduction Many of us have our favourite characters from TV shows and films, as well as favourite TV shows and films.  We laugh at our favourite comedies, or cry at our favourite dramas, or jump at our favourite horrors.  We become so engrossed by the content that the stalker on the screen holds us in…

Rockin’ Atheism Pt. 1: The Wrongness of Aron Ra

Introduction A discussion involving Aron Ra, centered around the definition of atheism, blew up on Twitter the other day.  Generally, it is not a discussion I tend to get involved in.  That is not to say that I have not got into discussions about how it is defined, it is just to say that for…

Is it rational to form beliefs based on testimony?

Is it rational to form beliefs based on testimony?

Introduction When the word testimony is brought up most people’s minds will immediately be brought to a court room scene, or to someone bearing witness to some religious experience.  A witness in the box stands in front of the court and gives their eyewitness testimony as part of the evidence for either the prosecution or…

The Faith of Science

The Faith of Science

Introduction The sun will rise tomorrow.  This seems to be an uncontroversial statement.  The sun came up today, and the sun came up yesterday, and the day before that.  Just as it has for millions of days before that.  Gravity held today, just as it has held since the formation of the universe.  This is,…

Beliefs, Language, and Logic

Introduction Logic is an important part of rationality. After all, acting rationally is acting in accordance with reason and according to the rules of logic, among other things. Which means that understanding the rules of logic are important if one wants to claim rationality for oneself.  There is more to logic than simply the rules…
