What is a Category Error?

A category error happens when someone assigns a property to something that it can’t possibly have. It’s like saying, “This brick is feeling sad.” Bricks don’t have emotions, so the statement is meaningless.

Philosophers use category errors to highlight flawed reasoning. If someone says, “Science can’t explain beauty,” they might be placing “beauty” in the wrong category—science explains physical processes, not subjective experiences.

Recognizing category errors helps us avoid confusion in debates, philosophy, and everyday conversations.
